Our Current Board - 2011/2012Kathleen Haggith (Interim President/Vice President)Kathleen is currently the Associate Dean of Vancouver Island University's Faculty of Health and Human Services, and is a sessional instructor with the SEAC and CSW programs. She also taught with Selkirk College's Classroom and Community Support Worker program before moving back to Nanaimo. Kathleen was the Executive Director for the Trail Association for Community Living, and also was the owner and director of a private organization that provided various residential and community support for individuals living in the community. She was Vice Chair of the Trail Greater Community Skills Center, and served as a board member with this organization for a number of years. Kathleen is very excited to be a part of NACL, and we are equally as pleased to have someone with her background and expertise join our board in February 2006. Phyllis Chivers (Treasurer)Phyllis Chivers, a Certified Management Accountant, has been involved with business and community development since she moved to Nanaimo in 1992. As a small business advisor with Community Futures for seven years, Phyllis has played a role in the development of many small businesses. She is currently developing her own business plan, which will utilize her skills as a research and business analyst. As a parent of a daughter with Down's Syndrome, Phyllis has been involved with the community of persons with developmental disabilities for 30 years. Phyllis strongly believes that every individual has a productive role they can play in the community. She supports and hopes to contribute to NACL's efforts to personalize productive plans for each of its clients. At the same time, experience has shown Phyllis the importance of the social community for persons with developmental disabilities. However important community integration may be, Phyllis believes that this social community must be nurtured as a safe base from which individual devlopment can occur. Phyllis has served on the Board of Directors for United Way as Treasurer and as Vice President. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Nanaimo Citizen Advocacy as Treasurer. Phyllis was elected to NACL's Board of Directors on April 29, 2008. |
