What are we looking for?
CSW's and cyc's
NACL hires Casual Community Support Workers (CSW’s) and Child and Youth Care Workers (CYC's) on an “as needed” basis throughout the year - and who often move into permanent positions shortly after hire. We have several programs, including residential, vocational, community inclusion, and various specialized programs. Our residential programs operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Casual employees will be assigned to three programs and will be required to be available (on-call) for various shifts, including night shifts and weekends. Once hired as a Casual employee, you will be eligible to apply for temporary and permanent vacancies within the agency as they come up.

Job Summary
To assist individuals with the activities of daily living involving personal, social, physical, recreational, vocational, educational, and environmental needs. CSW’s and CYC's perform all duties in a safe, efficient, and respectful manner in order to promote choice, independence, and integration for the individuals being served.
CSW’s and CYC's must adhere to the philosophies, policies, and procedures of Nanaimo Association for Community Living and in accordance with relevant Legislation and Regulations (i.e. Residential Care Regulations, Motor Vehicle Act, etc.).
CSW Qualifications

Preferably a Community Support Worker diploma, Home Support/Resident Care Attendant, Long-Term Care Aide, or equivalent post-secondary education;

Several years of experience in supporting people with intellectual and physical disabilities in a community setting;

Ability to relate effectively to persons with intellectual and physical disabilities;
-
Ability to effectively support people who may exhibit challenging behaviours;
-
Ability to work as an effective team member;
-
Demonstrated initiative in assisting an individual to develop personal networks and establish recreational and social activities;
-
Demonstrated ability to develop, write, and follow through with personalized plans;
-
Demonstrated ability and willingness to try new activities that may prove challenging;
-
Ability to document effectively; and
-
Demonstrated ability and willingness to implement the Service Principles.
CYC Qualifications

A diploma or degree in one of the humanities (Child and Youth Care, Social Worker, Community Support Worker, or related field);
-
A minimum of two (2) years' recent related experience in child and youth care, or a combination of relevant education and experience;
-
Knowledge and experience in the areas of positive behaviour supports and trauma informed practice; and
-
Knowledge of the Child, Family, and Community Serves Act.
Benefits and Wages
Once on staff and upon obtaining either a temporary or permanent position with us, we have a great benefits package that includes extended medical, dental, and pension. The starting wage is $21.63/hour, and goes up to $25.19/hour.
Conditions of Employment
As an accredited agency, NACL employees are required to meet a number of conditions to be employed. Therefore, applicants who are shortlisted at the interview stage will be required to submit the following before starting employment:

Current Emergency First Aid and CPR-C Certificate* (The Ministry of Health only recognizes certain first aid courses, two of which are Emergency First Aid – Community Care with CPR-C and Emergency First Aid with CPR-C. Please note that the Emergency First Aid with CPR-C class is offered by Alert First Aid, which can be reached in Nanaimo at 778-654-7599.)
* As per the Ministry of Health's Residential Care Regulations, employees are required to have a valid recognized first aid certificate at all times while employed by NACL. It is the responsibility of the employee to ensure this is kept current.

A clear Criminal Record Check** (NACL will provide the appropriate form).

A clear Ministry of Children and Family Development Criminal Record Check** (NACL will provide the appropriate form), if applying as a CYC.

A note from your physician stating that you are mentally and physically able to carry out the assigned duties (NACL will provide the appropriate form.)

Proof of double vaccination for COVID-19 (must be provided prior to booking an interview).
